Wow! An agreement!!!

The White House has said it welcomes the defeat of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's controversial reform plans in a referendum.

"It looks like the people spoke their minds... and I think that bodes well for the country's future and freedom and liberty," a spokeswoman said.

Mr Chavez narrowly lost his bid to change the constitution but says he will try again to win approval.

The changes would let a president stand indefinitely for re-election.

I'm not philisophically opposed to a person being able to run for office over and over again. What's wrong with it is when the whole game is a money game and not a philosophy game. In Chavez' case, it just seemed too egotistical. He needs to build up some people to follow intelligently in his footprints, and this will force that issue. I believe if he's going to pursue this on a more intellectual than emotional plane, then he needs to make his referendum say it will effective after he steps down from office.

I know his fears - giant US firms (read CIA if you wish) coming in and taking over the election process. It's been done before. If he can train his citizens to watch and know when the US is playing those games, he will leave a more lasting impression on history than if he simply becomes "permanent President".

It is intriguing to see that the press has changed the tenor of what the referendum said now that it's over. All the articles from the past few months said he was looking to be the permanent President, which I am totally against. Turns out that now they're admitting he was asking for the repeal of term limits, which I am totally for. I truly believe people can be taught to be smart, and that people wouldn't elect an idiot three times, even if they were stupid enough to elect him twice. Well, gotta take that back, I guess the people didn't have a say in our last two elections. Sorry, writing too fast.

Just for the record - I still think Chavez has a lot to offer the world in terms of understanding the imperialism of the past 100 years.

I understand what your hubby is saying, there was a time when I felt the same thing - some executive order, recall of the bill of rights, plus it's probably written in that patriot act somewhere that he can do that. But I don't think congress (or the military) will allow it unless the war gets really hot and heavy.

Of course, with congress continuing to support the war by allowing the financing of the war, one never knows.

What angers me the most about this is he keeps saying people don't support the troops, but the money is NOT going to the troops, it's going to civilian contractors like Haliburton, etc, etc. Congress says that, the media acknowledges that, but no one is willing to stop that.

Anyway, I understand your hubby, and I am hoping he's wrong. Lord knows, we've seen Bush steal two elections, but they were close (like the chavez term limit election - 50.1% to 49.9%). I dn't think there's any way that Bush can re-convince people anymore of how smart he is. Even die-hard Bush fans have been affected by his policies. The only ones who will vote for him now are the few who are profiting from Haliburton, and the NCLB profit makers from the mandated tests - another real small number who are making huge profits on the backs of all students.

I'm a little torn about supporting the troups..I supported the first ones that went to war..and believed in their cause. They are true Heros...but as time went by, and we seen the lies unfold..i feel i don't support those that continue to join..Why are they there??????? to get money for signing up? it's not the same as i felt in the beginning..My opinion has changed.
i also saw on t.v. wher a guy had his legs blown off and the Goverment wanted him to send his sign on bonus back because he didn't finish his time...After seeing that, and knowing that it was no accident that this man got this letter ( Lord knows how many got this letter) how can ANYONE join up? it in my opinion would be for the money...nothing more.
Ohio is falling into terriable times, people are robbing like never before. even taking rings off old lady's fingers..breaking into houses every single day..some people don't have enough food and medical attention. Some don't even have heat anymore..the cost is soaring..we need to help our own people and quit thinking of giving billions to other countrys..our own country is falling. i think, truly think Bush enjoys watching Americans suffer and wants to poverize us all..He hate Americans for some reason.
